This vibrant small town was founded in 1877 as the
port town for the Hodgkinson River
Goldfields. After a series of names such as as Terrigal, Island
Point, Port Owen and Salisbury it was settled with the name Port
Douglas. Named in honour of former Queensland premier John Douglas

four-wheel drive, Harley motorbike or bicycle. Most accommodations
in Port Douglas are within walking distance of restaurants and shops
in town. For the ones that are a little bit too far to travel on
foot, there are buses that run every half hour and charge around $2
one-way.
